Become a Portugal Country National - conditions for applying under Law 37/81 of October 3:

1) Portuguese nationality by attribution originates and takes effect from birth, and can be transmitted to subsequent generations.

a) Sons of a Portuguese mother or father born in Portuguese territory;

b) Sons of a Portuguese mother or father born abroad if the Portuguese parent is there in the service of the Portuguese State;

c) Sons of a Portuguese mother or father born abroad if they have their birth registered in the Portuguese civil registry or if they declare that they want to be Portuguese;

d) Persons with at least one ascendant of Portuguese originating from the 2nd degree in the straight line who have not lost that nationality, if they declare that they want to be Portuguese and have ties of effective connection to the national community;

e) Persons born in Portuguese territory, children of foreigners, if at least one of the parents was also born here and lives here, regardless of title, at the time of birth;

f) Persons born in Portuguese territory, children of foreigners who are not in the service of the respective State, who do not declare that they do not want to be Portuguese, provided that, at the time of birth, one of the parents legally resides in Portuguese territory, or lives here, regardless of title, for at least one year;

g) Persons born in Portuguese territory and who have no other nationality.

2) Portuguese nationality by acquisition is derived and has restrictions, and cannot be transmitted in all cases.

a) The minor or incapacitated sons of a father or mother acquiring nationality may also acquire it, upon declaration;

b) A foreigner married to a Portuguese national for more than three years may acquire nationality by declaration made during the marriage;

c) A foreigner living in a de facto union with a Portuguese national for more than three years at the time of the declaration may acquire nationality by filing a suit for recognition of this situation in the civil court;

d) Those who have lost nationality as a result of a declaration made during their incapacity may acquire it, when capable, by declaration;

e) The person adopted by a Portuguese national acquires Portuguese nationality.

2.1) Become a Country National by Naturalization – Requirements:

a) They are of legal age or emancipated in the face of Portuguese law;

b) To have resided legally in Portuguese territory for at least five years;

c) They have sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language;

d) Have not been convicted of a sentence of imprisonment of three years or more for a crime punishable under Portuguese law;

e) Do not constitute a danger or threat to national security or defense by their involvement in activities related to the practice of terrorism, under the terms of the respective law;

f) To minors born in Portuguese territory, sons of foreigners, who have reached the age of criminal responsibility, at the time of the request, they fulfill one of the following conditions: one of the parents has resided here, regardless of title, for at least the five years immediately preceding the request; one of the parents has legal residence in the national territory; the minor here has attended at least one year of pre-school education or basic, secondary or vocational education;

g) To persons who have held Portuguese nationality and, having lost it, have never acquired another nationality;

h) To persons who, while not stateless, have held Portuguese nationality, to those who are considered the descendants of original Portuguese nationals, to members of communities of Portuguese descent, and to foreigners who have rendered or are called upon to render relevant services to the Portuguese State or to the national community;

i) To descendants of Portuguese Sephardic Jews, by demonstrating the tradition of belonging to a Sephardic community of Portuguese origin, based on proven objective requirements of connection to Portugal, namely surnames, family language, direct or collateral descent;

j) To persons who are ascendants of original Portuguese citizens, have resided here, regardless of title, for at least 5 years immediately prior to the application and provided that the ascendancy was established at the time of the Portuguese citizen’s birth.

  • a) The issuing State is a signatory to one of the transit conventions (Geneva, 1949 and/or Vienna, 1968) or has signed a bilateral agreement with the Portuguese State about recognition of driving titles;

    b) No more than 15 years have elapsed since the issue of the foreign driving license or the last renewal;

    c) The holder is under 60 years of age;

    d) The foreign driver’s license must be valid;

    e) The driver must be of the minimum age established in Portugal to drive the vehicle(s) of the category(ies) contained in his foreign driving license; the title foreign driving license is not seized, suspended, expired or revoked by virtue of a legal provision, administrative decision or judicial sentence applied to its holder in Portugal or in the issuing State; 

  • 3) Holders of driving licenses obtained in countries with a bilateral agreement or reciprocity regime for the recognition and exchange of driving licenses, adhering to international transit conventions:  may drive in national territory with a foreign driving license for a period of 185 days thereafter upon entry and prior to taking up residence; after establishing residence, they must take into account the following deadlines, counting from the day they obtain the residence permit:up to 90 days, they can continue to drive with a foreign driver’s license, but must file an exchange request at the IMT, IP; after the initial 90 days and up to 2 years, they can apply for an exchange at the IMT, IP, but they can no longer drive in Portugal with the foreign title; after 2 years, they cannot drive with a foreign driving license and if they wish to exchange it for a Portuguese driving license, they will be submitted to a practical driving test.
